Default Bins versus Multi-Bin setup in GP

Default Bins versus Multi-Bin setup in GP

Default Bin Setup

Within Dynamics GP, a Default Bin can be assigned to an item for each site. This is ideal when all items have a single designated location within your warehouse or stockroom.

From the PanatrackerGP mobile interface, this bin designation displays as read-only. With default bin setup:

  • No transactions are associated at the bin level
  • Items cannot be moved from the designated bin to another bin
  • The system doesn't track items in other physical locations within a site

Multi-Bin Setup

Enabling multi-bins in GP (Inventory > Setup > Inventory Control) allows you to set up multiple bin locations for each site and maintain inventory levels for the same item in multiple locations.

Available Features

With multi-bin enabled, you can designate bins based on various transactions:

  • Purchase receipts
  • Sales order fulfillment (pick)
  • Returns
  • Assembly and manufacturing issues and receipts

These can be configured at the site level or for individual items. For example:

  • Site-level: Define a dock bin area for receiving. All items are received to the dock bin, then moved via put-away as a second step.
  • Item-level: Assign a sales order fulfillment default bin for directed picking.

Priority Bin Setup

Priority bins provide additional control:

  • Set Priority 1 as your primary stock location (e.g., same as Sales Order Fulfillment default)
  • Configure overflow areas as Priority 2, 3, etc.
  • Enable validation on priority bins in PanatrackerGP to better contain inventory to designated areas
  • Set min and max quantities on each priority bin

Benefits

Multi-bin tracking provides:

  • Location-level reporting
  • Cycle counting based on segmented areas within each site
  • Quick spot counts with quantities reported to specific locations
  • Ideal support for regularly moved inventory or items stocked in multiple physical areas

Note: Without mobile and barcode technology, multi-bin tracking is difficult to manage. PanatrackerGP enables maximum efficiency for multi-bin inventory management.

Tips for Enabling Multi-Bins

If you're already using inventory in Dynamics GP, plan and coordinate the multi-bin enablement process. Work with your Dynamics GP partner and follow this checklist:

  1. Plan your bin setup — Use a logical sort order for bins. Space numbering to accommodate future bin additions. Start with larger areas if possible. You can add bins later, but removing existing bins is difficult.

  2. Post all inventory transactions — Ensure all adjustments and site transfers are posted. When you enable multi-bins, run inventory reconcile and check links in GP. This creates an "autocreate" bin as default if any transactions are pending.

  3. Assign existing inventory to bins — After adding bins to GP, use the PanatrackerGP application to assign existing inventory to bin locations. We recommend using the bin move transaction to move items from the autocreate bin to their new locations.

  4. Handle sites without multiple bins — Even sites without multiple bin locations need a bin setup, and all transactions require a bin assignment. Many customers create a bin with the same name as the site for this scenario.
