Build Unit (Parent-Child Association)
The Build Unit transaction defines a master item and associates components in a parent-child relationship. The master (parent) item is the unit interacted with for moves, transfers, check outs, and other transactions. Component (child) items are nested as part of the parent.
Setup Requirements
On item template setup:
- Enable the appropriate rule: Track as Master Item (parent) or Enable as Component Item (child). An item can be set up as both — the system supports unlimited nesting.
- A master item must be serial-tracked. Component items can be either serial or quantity-tracked.
- Determine if the component is returnable:
- Returnable — The component is tracked with In Build status when attached to a parent. It can be returned to Available status if removed.
- Not returnable — The component is marked as Consumed when added and is no longer tracked outside of reporting.
Transaction Entry
On the desktop, Build Unit supports both adding and removing components. On the mobile app, these are separate transactions: Build Unit and Build Unit Update.
Adding Components
- Build Unit Handle — Select the master/parent unit. The item must have the setup requirements above. A new parent unit can also be created on the fly using + (desktop) or the Create Unit tab (mobile).
- Component items are displayed on the left side (desktop) or the Components tab (mobile).
- Returnable components receive In Build status. Non-returnable components receive Consumed status.
Removing Components
Returnable components can be removed by selecting Remove Component (desktop) or using the Build Unit Update transaction (mobile). The component status can be set to:
- Available — Return to active inventory.
- On Hold — Place on hold for review.
- Adjustment — Remove from the system completely.
Grid View
- Returnable components (In Build status) can be displayed on the main grid view by enabling that status type in grid view settings.
- The Build Unit grid view lists master/parent items with a + action to view returnable components. The Component tab shows all items with In Build status.
